Art Blog of Kei Liwanag

Today, I am more confident, my heart is open to hope, I have faith in myself. No, the laborious studies I work at are not useless, the road I am following is a good one, and with the help of God, I shall achieve glory, a just and a pure glory. - W. Bouguereau

Artbook again! YAY!

September 22, 2008

Tonight I bought a lot of big canvases, they’re with wood frames so they’re kinda thick and a hassle to carry. I can’t wait to splatter paint on them. =D I’ll shop again on Friday because the bookstore where I went tonight was way low on paint materials although there’s this shiny  tall, black, and handsome wooden easel I fell in love with. I don’t know how I’ll carry it, but I’m gonna buy it one of these days. I’ll name it…bishieasel. ♥

When I got home, I received an e-mail saying that I’ll be featured in the first volume of ArtSquared artbook! Wow, I didn’t expect this because I saw the ‘call for entries’ link in someone’s blog last friday so I clicked and submitted works then when I browsed the site, it says on the news page that the deadline was last Sept. 15! Shoot! So yeah, I thought this thing was over and my entries were disqualified. T__T; But I got an email tonight asking for hi-res files of 3 of my works, a short bio, and a mug shot! How cool! Yay! Thank you ArtSquared! They’re also launching an art community soon so please keep a close eye on them. =)

This is my third book this year…so happy and grateful. ♥ ♥ ♥

Skin Practice and Buncha Stuffs

September 20, 2008

Photobucket Photobucket

The way I rendered his skin is better than my last two portraits. Don’t pay attention to his shirt because I didn’t. LOL! I used an uhljjang pic as a reference but I didn’t color picked using  the photo, I picked my own colors and I actually learned a technique while doing this. I applied it to my current work (see wip) and I’ll make a blog about this process when I master it. I call it “The 5 Color Skin Tone”, where I just used 5 extreme colors that can be found in the default Photoshop swatches. I’m pretty excited to try this technique in oil, hopefully, it is possible and I can achieve the same result. It’s easy and definitely not confusing since you’ll only be using 5 colors, well actually just 3! Aaaargh, I’ll explain it when I master it. ^__^;

Anyways, in other news. There’s an unusual job at work tonight. This guy is using storyboards as a way to propose to his girl. Aww…sweet. But right now, he’s being a little picky with the pencils, the girl needs to really look like his girlfriend. Hopefully he’s not going to be a pain when we go to color. And hey, he’s pretty rich. He’s got more frames than some clients with actual ads.

In another news again, someone wants to make an oil painting of myself as a gift. I said no, then he said “mahusay ka kasi kaya ayaw mo.” [You’re good that’s why you don’t like (me to paint you.)] Uhh…no one has seen my oil paintings yet except for my master and a few officemates. I’m an oil painting noob so I’d appreciate it if I get critiques from someone who knows my paintings rather than assumptions that I paint good. I just don’t think I’m worthy enough to be painted. Plus, I’ll feel more vain when I hang a portrait of myself in my room, my mirror is enough for me. He also reads my blog, so I bet he’s reading this now. Hello to you! The thought is enough, it’s appreciated. =)

In another news yet again, I’ll be busier these days since an exhibit is in the works. Need to hone my oil painting skills. As I’ve said above, I’m a noob but I don’t want to show that I’m a noob. I want people to think that I’ve been oil painting since Renaissance period. Harhar! I have a list of people that I need to impress but most of all, I need to impress myself. I’ve been hard on myself lately and that’s because I’m lazy, and this line rhymes like crazy. HAHA! I’ll announce it when we finalize it. Stay tuned.  =)

Oh man. I Can’t Draw Nudes Anymore…

…if this ridiculous bill by Manny Villar will be approved.  >:o

Download the actual bill here.

(a) “Obscene” refers to anything that is indecent or offensive or contrary to good customs or religious beliefs, principles or doctrines, or tends to corrupt or deprave the human mind, or is calculated to excite impure thoughts or arouse prurient interest, or violates the proprieties of language and human behavior, regardless of the motive of the producer, printer, publisher, writer, importer,seller, distributor or exhibitor such as, but not limited to:

(1) showing, depicting or describing sexual acts; (2) showing, depicting or describing human sexual organs or the female breasts;
(3) showing, depicting or describing completely nude human bodies
(4) describing erotic reactions, feelings or experiences on sexual acts or;
(5) performing live sexual acts of whatever form.

 b) “Pornographic or pornography” refers to objects or subjects of film, television shows, photography, illustrations, music, games, paintings, drawings, illustrations, advertisements, writings, literature or narratives, contained in any format, whether audio or visual, still or moving pictures, in all forms of film, print, electronic, outdoor or broadcast mass media, or whatever future technologies to be developed, which are calculated to excite, stimulate or arouse impure thoughts and prurient interest, regardless of the motive of the author thereof.

*Sigh* Apparently showing of boobs is already obscene to them. If this bill was approved then no Filipino painter can draw or paint nude ‘regardless of motive‘, so yes, you can’t reason art and no, there’s no such thing as artistic nude. *eye roll* Hello I’m Kei, I love painting nudes that means I’m a pornographer.

But what if I just paint and hide my paintings and just put it in my blog? Oh wait, I can’t.

 “This Bill aims to criminalize the publication, broadcast, exhibition of pornographic materials including images that  appear in traditional media such as, but not limited to, paper, celluloid, film, magnetic tapes or through airwaves or through the use of computers, the internet, cyberspace, Internet chat, chat rooms, web sites, electronic mails optical media, and other technological advancements thereof to protect the morals of the society.”

Bullshit. I really hope that the senate is smart enough to reject or re-construct this bill, it’s way too restrictive. Banning nudity in this country will not protect the Filipino morals, dignity, or ANYTHING. This is pretty useless when there’s internet, what are they gonna do? Track every connection and arrest anyone who goes to porn sites? Put censors on old nude paintings already printed in books when being discussed in art class? RIDICULOUS.

Ugly Portraits

September 18, 2008

Photobucket

Lady With A Turban     |     Madame Red

Ugly portraits, they didn’t turn out the way I wanted. I’m frustrated.

I used my own colors and didn’t colorpick from real photos. I used a brush I made too…but yeah, I’m not happy with them. *sigh*

Featured!

September 14, 2008

Today, my friend and I were searching Friendster for our long lost friends, I told her a story about a guy friend who got pissed because some random guy made a friendster pretending to be him. LOL! So my friend asked in a joking way, “Do you think that somewhere out there, there’s also someone who pretends to be us?” We laughed and I said, “Wait, maybe there is already!” (I am kidding here ok?) So she suggested to google our names and search for our ‘posers’. HARHARHAR! Well my friend found her name in an article in Inquirer and some sites about her national badminton competitions and I found a couple of articles about me, and this is what this post is about. *beams*

STARTDRAWING.ORG : She called me girly! O_O;  -  Thank you Ms. Bel Ragay for your kind words. Is it that obvious that I like pink? Hehe! ^_~

PLUS63.NET : Thank you for my new blog pimpage! - Congrats to you too Mr. Nicc Balce and  Mr. Chester Ocampo!

DESIGN-ENTER.COM  - A site by a Korean Creative Director and Designer Mr. Kim Ji Hyun. Well this one doesn’t contain words but he featured some of my art in his blog which gave me a lot of Korean search results (Daum, Hyundai, Blogkorea, etc) that can help with my blog pageview and c’mon! Look at the artist line-up he blogged about– Audrey Kawasaki, Dan Luvisi (Adonihs), Owen Freeman… I feel so unworthy ToT; . Kamsahamnida Mr. Kim! I love Kimchi minus the veggies and the spices and the jar. Hehe! Peace! (^_^)v

I think digital art is nudging me since I’m too focused in my oil paintings lately… Ok, I’m gonna try my hardest to balance this plus yeah…I need more fresh art for the new lair I’m building. Ok Kei! Fighting! Aja! Yosh! Gambatte! Kain na! Woot! Kape! Kape!

Maraming salamat po.  :)

New Crush

September 2, 2008

 I have a new guy to stalk—Jeremy Lipking.

This quote can be found on his video and I like it also.

All any man can do, is add his fragment to the whole.No man can be final, but he can record his progress…What he leaves is so much for others to use as stones to step on,
or stones to avoid.
After all, the goal is not making art. It is living a life.
Those who live their lives will leave the stuff that is really art.

-Robert Henri, The Art Spirit

Some of Jeremy Lipking’s work:

Images taken from Jeremy Lipking’s official site

Wow right? I will paint like him someday, if not I’ll kill myself…or maybe I’ll just meet up with him and cut his hand, whichever is less of a hassle. LOL. He’s only 30 years old, I only have 6 years to achieve this kind of work. I must start now.

I’m in a hunt for new oil painters to fuel my drive. Hmm, this oil painting thing is turning out to be an obsession. Is this healthy? Yep, it is! I’ve never been so driven, thank God for this motivation, I feel so frustrated but alive. =)
