Art Blog of Kei Liwanag

Today, I am more confident, my heart is open to hope, I have faith in myself. No, the laborious studies I work at are not useless, the road I am following is a good one, and with the help of God, I shall achieve glory, a just and a pure glory. - W. Bouguereau

Bouguereau Skin Color Study Video Files

October 29, 2008

Photobucket

I decided to record a skin practice in Photoshop using primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and black and white. I used ‘Une Vocation’ as a reference, it’s by my fave master painter William Bouguereau. <3 I have a lot of skin study posts, i know, sorry, I just want to perfect and explore different ways of rendering the skin. It’s an essential thing for me since I love painting figures especially nudes and portraits. <3

The videos were recorded in real time. Click the thumbnail below for a tutorial on how you can watch them in high speed using Windows Media Player so you don’t have to sit through 106 mins of me coloring. I’m too slow on this practice, you’ll get bored. =P I also put some screen caps so you’ll see the progress in each file.

EDIT: I have stats. All download and no comment makes kei lazy. Boo.

Do I Really Have To Put A Title Here?

October 25, 2008

First of all many many thanks to the i.ph staff for featuring my blog on their front page.“Kei is definitely one of those up-and-coming artists to watch out for.”   This is weird, I wrote a bio last night and that was my first line too! (of course I whored myself out in my bio! Harhar! XD ). We have ESPn. Thanks Mr. Ade, Thank you i.ph!

This has been a roller coaster day. A day with menstruation (the day not me!). Mood swings all the way…

Shelly, Al Rio, and I went gallery-hopping today from Megamall to Bonifacio High Street. It was tiring but I love the ‘art’ experience. We’re fortunate that the curators we talked to were friendly. =) On the way back to Makati, we checked out Ayala Museum for the Amorsolo’s Women: Concealed and Revealed exhibit. It was my first time to see a real-life Amorsolo painting and I was blown away! I have a new crush *__* I want to steal a portrait but they’re too large for my purse. HAHA! Kidding! Anyways, do not miss this event! I want to point out my fave paintings but the internet has failed me. It’s so hard to look for Amorsolo portraits on the net, why oh why? Oh, I also touched 2 types of dinosaur poo, a grey and a brown one and I bought an Amorsolo pencil case for my chalk and charcoal. Wut?

Went home, napped and was awoken by a text message, went to work early at 10 pm, had a heavy meeting…

And now chatting with the amazing Mico Suayan. He told me that my super duper cameo Marvel appearance is colored already! This is a comic from Marvel entitled ‘Werewolf by Night’. Lines by Mico Suayan and I don’t know the colorist. XP  Thank you Mico! *__*

 Photobucket

Yes yes yes…this is just a cameo but who knows? I might be discovered and  have super powers next or I might marry a hot super villain! XD Oh yeah, that’s “kei03″ in my shirt, it’s my DeviantArt username, Mico drew this long ago when I was still alive there.

“Have no fear, Keiskuses is here!” Cliche but wow that so fits! *____*

A New Way to Render Skin

October 21, 2008

I made this last week at work. I tried making another new way to render the skin. There’s only 2 steps in this, here’s how:

Photobucket

Step 1: With a cool brown background, draw and render in black and white on a separate layer. It’s ok if you want to put in some grays too, but if you want to be fast just put black and white in your foreground and background color selection box so you can just  ‘X’ (shortcut for switching the foreground and background colors) along the way and save time by not color-picking. You’ll also be more conscious of the light and shadow since color is out of the way.

Photobucket

Step 2: After rendering in B&W, it’s time to color! Woot! Actually this is the easiest part. All you have to do is make a new layer on top of the first layer, set it in soft light with a low opacity, and brush over the skin part using a default Photoshop brush. Click on the above image to see what I mean. You don’t have to re-render, you just have to cover the skin.

Photobucket

Final: This is the finished version, I put an adjustment layer on top for my personal satisfaction, I was feeling an earthy look for this. I also like the dirtiness of the lines so I didn’t bother cleaning it. I used this wonderful stock photo by bobbistock of DA as a reference.

That’s it! Fast and easy right? ;)
